🥃 Tomatin Legacy
Tomatin single malt whisky with no age statement: bourbon barrels and new oak casks, no peat, 43% ABV.
Tomatin Legacy is a single malt Scotch whisky from Tomatin, sold without an age statement; the producer's website lists it at the start of the core range. It is an unpeated Highland whisky bottled at 43% ABV in a 0.7 l bottle. Unlike the age-stated expressions, it matures partly in new, previously unused oak casks.
How it is made. The whisky matures in ex-bourbon barrels and in new virgin oak casks. According to The Dramble's 2017 review, the main maturation takes place in bourbon barrels, with about a year in new oak. Whisky Advocate also gives 43% ABV and the same cask combination. The producer describes aromas of vanilla, white chocolate and cinnamon, and says the new oak adds a light sweetness.
Why it matters to you. No age on the label does not mean the whisky is very young: by law, Scotch whisky must mature for at least 3 years. Legacy is lighter than Tomatin 12 Year Old, which has sherry casks, and than Tomatin 14 Year Old, which has port casks, so compare them by cask type. The WHO reminds us: there is no safe dose of alcohol.
