🥃 Tomatin 14 Year Old
14-year-old Tomatin single malt finished in Tawny Port casks; 46% ABV.
Tomatin 14 Year Old is a single malt from Tomatin in which Tawny Port casks play the decisive role. The youngest whisky in the bottle is at least 14 years old, and the strength is 46% ABV, higher than in Legacy and 12 Year Old. The producer describes it as soft and sweet, with red berries, honey and iris.
How it is made. According to The Spirits Business (2014), this expression then replaced the 15-year-old in the range: 13 years in bourbon barrels, followed by a year in Portuguese Tawny Port casks. The Dramble's 2017 review describes the same process. The producer's website says the casks had held port for about 50 years, while the 2014 article gives 30–40 years.
Why it matters to you. Port gives the whisky a berry-sweet profile, which makes the 14 Year Old the sweetest in the range. For a drier taste with nutty notes, compare it with Tomatin 18 Year Old from oloroso casks. The WHO reminds us: there is no safe dose of alcohol.

What to read next
- 🍷 Alcohol and health — Alcohol in any drink is harmful in large amounts, and the risks grow with the quantity.
- 🥃 Barley and malt in whisky — Malted barley is the base of whisky: malt enzymes convert starch in the mash, and EU whisky is distilled below 94.8% vol.
- 🥃 Tomatin 12 Year Old — 12-year-old Tomatin single malt (Triple Cask): bourbon, sherry and refill casks; 43% ABV.
- 🍷 Drunk driving — Never drive after drinking wine: alcohol slows your reactions.
- 🥃 Ex-bourbon barrel — American white oak cask of 180–200 litres used for bourbon: bourbon may only be aged in new charred casks, so used ones go to Scotch, Irish whiskey and rum.
