🥃 Tomatin 12 Year Old
12-year-old Tomatin single malt (Triple Cask): bourbon, sherry and refill casks; 43% ABV.
Tomatin 12 Year Old is the youngest age-stated single malt in the Tomatin core range. The bottle contains whisky at least 12 years old, bottled at 43% ABV. The producer now calls it Triple Cask: the whisky matures in three cask types, which makes it fuller than Tomatin Legacy.
How it is made. According to the Tomatin website, the whisky matures in ex-bourbon barrels, ex-Spanish sherry casks and refill casks. The Dramble's 2017 review described an earlier version: maturation in bourbon barrels and 6–9 months of finishing in sherry casks. So the cask mix has changed over the years. The producer mentions notes of heather, crème caramel, apple, pear and mango, and an oily finish.
Why it matters to you. This is the middle of the range: older and fuller than Legacy, but lighter than Tomatin 18 Year Old, which is finished in oloroso casks. If you want a soft, unpeated Highland whisky, compare these three expressions by their casks. The WHO reminds us: there is no safe dose of alcohol.
