Peated single malt distillery at Teangue, Sleat, on the Isle of Skye, in a restored farmstead; distilling since 2017; Legacy Series and Taigh (46% ABV).

Torabhaig is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery and brand at Teangue, Sleat, on the Isle of Skye. According to the distillery, it was created by restoring an old farmstead and is the second licensed single malt distillery on the island. Its house style is peated whisky, which the distillery calls "smoke with taste".

History. The distillery says planning permission was granted in 2002, Mossburn began the renovation and build in 2014, the twin copper pot stills and Douglas fir washbacks were installed and commissioned in 2016, and distilling began in 2017. It reports full production since January 2017.

Range. The Legacy Series is a set of limited editions documenting the house style: Ch.1 2017, Ch.2 Allt Gleann, Ch.3 Cnoc Na Mòine and Ch.4 Sound of Sleat. Taigh is the first core expression, matured in first-fill bourbon barrels, refill bourbon casks and selected Madeira casks and bottled at 46% without chill-filtration or colouring.

Why this matters to you. Whisky must mature at least three years in oak to be Scotch, and the distillery itself says its whiskies are still young. Check the bottling name, casks and strength on the label. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
