🥃 Tobermory
Distillery and single malt whisky brand in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, founded in 1798; makes unpeated Tobermory and peated Ledaig; owned by Distell.
Tobermory is a distillery and single malt Scotch whisky brand in the port of the same name on the Isle of Mull, in the Hebrides. It was founded in 1798 by local merchant John Sinclair, and it is now the only Scotch whisky distillery on the island. It makes two whiskies: the unpeated Tobermory and the heavily peated Ledaig.
History. The distillery often stood idle: from 1837 to 1878, from 1930 for more than forty years, and again from 1982 for 11 years. Burn Stewart bought it in 1993, and the South African company Distell in 2013. The distillery was modernised in 2017–2019. After Distell's 2023 deal with Heineken, the Scotch whisky business that includes Tobermory was spun off into a separate company, Capevin.
How it is made. According to Whiskypedia, there are four stills with globular bulges and S-shaped lyne arms, which increase reflux and make the spirit lighter. Malt for Tobermory has up to 2 ppm of phenols, and malt for Ledaig at least 35 ppm; both styles are made in roughly equal amounts. Water comes from the Gearr Abhainn stream.
Range. The single malts are bottled without chill filtration at 46.3% vol. There is Tobermory 12 and older versions, as well as Ledaig 10 and longer-aged expressions. The distillery's whisky also goes into blends, for example Black Bottle.
Why this matters to you. Mull makes two whiskies that taste very different: the name Ledaig means the peated style, and Tobermory the unpeated one. Check the name and the age on the label before you choose. WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
