📍 Württemberg
The Neckar valley near Stuttgart, where more red wine is drunk.
Württemberg is a wine zone in south-western Germany, in the valley of the Neckar river. The main part lies between Stuttgart and Heilbronn; the zone also includes the Rems valley, Kocher-Jagst-Tauber, the Upper Neckar and the shore of Lake Constance. The vineyard area is about 11,500 hectares, making it Germany's fourth-largest wine region. The zone is part of German wine.
Unlike most other German regions, red wine has long been made here: about 71% of plantings are red grapes. The best-known grape is Trollinger: it covers about a fifth of the area, and Württemberg holds almost all of Germany's Trollinger. The wine from it is pale, light and sometimes slightly sweet. Next in importance come Schwarzriesling (Pinot Meunier), Lemberger (the local name for Blaufränkisch) and Spätburgunder.
The most common white grape is Riesling, about 18%. A blend of red and white grapes is also common, from which a pale red wine called Schillerwein is made.
About 70 cooperatives produce almost three quarters of the region's wine. Schwarzriesling (Pinot Meunier) covers about 15% of the area, Lemberger about 14% and Spätburgunder about 11%.
