Also known as: Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin

A Champagne house in Reims, founded in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot; part of the LVMH group.

Veuve Clicquot is a Champagne house in Reims. According to the LVMH group, which owns it, the house was founded in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot, a textile merchant from Reims. After the death of his son François in 1805, the house was taken over by his 27-year-old widow, Barbe Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin; the French word “veuve” in the name means “widow”.

According to the group, Madame Clicquot created the first vintage Champagne in 1810, invented the riddling table (for gradually turning the bottles) in 1816 and in 1818 made the first rosé Champagne by blending white and red wine. The house’s best-known cuvées are Brut Yellow Label and La Grande Dame. The owner is the LVMH group.

Champagne is a wine with a protected designation of origin (PDO). The bubbles come only from a second fermentation in the bottle, the wine is aged for at least 15 months before sale (36 for vintage), and all production takes place only within the delimited area. Veuve Clicquot is a brand; Champagne is the name of a place.

Why it matters to you. The yellow label and names such as “Yellow Label” or “La Grande Dame” are the house’s own trademarks, while the terms brut, millésime (vintage) and blanc de blancs are set by the rules. The WHO reminds: there is no safe level of alcohol.
