The uplands above the northern shore.

Balaton-felvidék (“Balaton Uplands”) is a wine district on the northern shore of Lake Balaton in Hungary. It is hilly country with volcanic remains: basalt hills with flat tops rise above the lake. Lake Balaton is the largest in Central Europe. It softens the climate: in summer it reflects light and warmth, and in autumn the water releases its heat for a long time.

The district belongs to the larger Balaton wine region. It includes the Káli Basin and the Nivegy Valley (Nivegy-völgy), each with its own character. Soils of basalt and sandstone give the wines a marked minerality.

The main grape is Welschriesling (Olaszrizling in Hungarian), which gives fresh wines with citrus scents and good acidity. Alongside it Pinot Gris (Szürkebarát in Hungarian), Chardonnay, Riesling and other varieties are grown. Many estates are small, and some wine is released under the names of individual hills.

For comparison with its neighbours: to the west along the lake lie Badacsony with Pinot Gris and Balatonboglár on the southern shore, and further north-east Mór and Etyek with their white wines.
