A basalt hill on the northern shore.

Badacsony is a wine district on the northern shore of Lake Balaton in western Hungary. It occupies the slopes of the mountain of the same name, an extinct volcano made of basalt. The hill rises straight above the lake, which shapes the taste of the wine.

Basalt soils are rich in minerals and warm up well, and the lake reflects sunlight, warming the grapes. The climate is mild and autumns are long. The wines are full-bodied, mineral, with good acidity.

The local symbol is the white Kéknyelű (blue stalk). It is very rare and grows mostly here. Its wines age well, with a dense taste and a spicy aroma. Olaszrizling (Welschriesling), Szürkebarát (Pinot Gris, meaning grey friar), Riesling and Chardonnay are also grown.

Badacsony is part of the Balaton region, where Nagy-Somló, with its volcanic hill and wedding-night wine, also lies. Badacsony is the lake's best-known white wine district, and many visitors come for the scenery too. These whites suit lake fish such as pike-perch, cooked around Balaton. The name Badacsony on a label shows that the grapes grew in this very area, which makes it easy to look for similar wines.
