Mexican tequila brand from the Amatitan estate in Jalisco, with history from 1870; the name means horseshoe; owned by Brown-Forman since 2007.

Herradura is a Mexican tequila brand of Casa Herradura in Amatitán, Jalisco. According to Brown-Forman, the house's craft dates back to 1870. Herradura means horseshoe in Spanish. In January 2007 Brown-Forman completed the acquisition of substantially all the assets of Grupo Industrial Herradura, the company behind Casa Herradura, for 776 million US dollars.

Range. Brown-Forman lists Herradura Silver, aged in barrels 45 days longer than the industry standard; Double Barrel Reposado, which rests 11 months in charred American white oak barrels and then 30 more days in new barrels; Legend, an añejo; and Selección Suprema, which the producer calls the first extra añejo in the world: 100% agave, aged 49 months in American white oak.

Raw material and rules. Tequila may be made only from blue Weber agave grown within the designation of origin area: 181 municipalities in five Mexican states, protected since 9 December 1974. Under NOM-006-SCFI-2012, reposado matures at least two months, añejo at least one year and extra añejo at least three years in oak; the containers for añejo and extra añejo hold up to 600 litres. Strength is 35-55% ABV.

Why it matters to you. Look for "100% de agave" on the label: it means no sugars other than blue agave sugars were added; without it, up to 49% of the sugars may come from other sources. The WHO reminds us that no level of alcohol consumption is safe for our health.
