📜 Vin de Savoie
The general appellation for Alpine wines of Savoie, mostly fresh whites.
Vin de Savoie is the general name for wines from French Savoie, in the Alps. It is an area at the foot of the mountains, near the border with Switzerland and Italy. The name is protected as a protected designation of origin (PDO) of the European Union and is listed in the eAmbrosia register.
Mostly fresh white wines are made here. The main grapes are Jacquère and Altesse, and also Chasselas. Among reds, Mondeuse Noire and Gamay are grown. There are also rosé and sparkling wines. All of them are sold under the common name, although the label often adds a separate village.
The mountain climate gives cool nights and bright sun on the slopes. As a result the wines are light, with good acidity. It is a skiers' wine: it is often drunk in winter resorts with the cheese cooking of the region.
Vin de Savoie is one example of France's alpine wines that remain little known outside the region.
