📍 Recaș
The largest zone of Banat, with a well-known winery.
Recaș is a wine zone in western Romania, in Timiș County, not far from the city of Timișoara. It belongs to the Banat Hills region and is one of the zones of that region. The Banat lies on the border with Serbia and Hungary, with a mild continental climate: warm summers, a mild autumn and moderate winters. Vineyards grow on gentle slopes and on the plain.
Recaș is known for a large winery that has worked here for a long time and has grown into one of the biggest in the country. Thanks to it, the name Recaș became known on export markets. Grapes in the zone vary: the local Fetească Neagră gives dark wines with scents of plum and pepper, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir also grow, and among whites Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and others.
The wines of the zone are red, white and rosé, more often soft and fruity. The PDO Recaș applies to wines coming specifically from this zone. Many estates welcome visitors, and wine tourism is gradually developing.
For comparison with its neighbours: to the south-west across the border lies Serbia's Vršac, to the north-west Hungary, and to the east Transylvania.
