Herradura añejo tequila made from 100% Weber blue agave: 24–25 months in ex-American whiskey barrels, 40% ABV; since 1962.

Herradura Añejo is a long-aged tequila from the Herradura brand, made from 100% Weber blue agave. According to the brand's website, it spends 25 months in barrel, twice the one-year minimum for añejo. Strength is 40% ABV. According to Difford's Guide, this version was launched in 1962.

Difford's Guide writes of 24–25 months in ex-American whiskey barrels and notes that many date the flourishing of the añejo category from this tequila. Under the Mexican standard, añejo matures for at least a year in oak barrels of up to 600 liters. According to the producer's description, the color is dark caramel with a copper tint; on the palate, nutty caramel, pineapple and orange.

Why this matters to you. Añejo sits in the middle of the older part of the range: Herradura Legend matures 12–14 months in fluted barrels, and Herradura Selección Suprema for 49 months. When comparing añejos from other brands, check the time in barrel: here it is longer than the minimum. The WHO reminds: there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
