🍾 Joseph Perrier
A Champagne house in Châlons-en-Champagne founded in 1825 by Joseph Perrier; its wines mature in five kilometres of cellars, partly of Gallo-Roman origin.
Joseph Perrier is a Champagne house in Châlons-en-Champagne. According to the house, Joseph Perrier founded the wine merchant “Joseph Perrier Fils & Cie” in 1825 and in 1827 moved to avenue de Paris in Châlons; he later became a general councillor and mayor of the town. In 1888 the company was taken over by Paul Pithois, a wine merchant, vineyard owner and cousin of the family. In 2025 the house marked its 200th anniversary.
According to the house, its historic cellars stretch for about 5 km: some galleries are Gallo-Roman chalk pits, the rest were dug by the house’s own workers between 1827 and 1835; all lie on one level and have 89 skylights. The house farms 24 ha of its own vineyards and sells about 70 % of its bottles abroad. In 1889 it became Champagne supplier to Queen Victoria and her son Edward VII. Its Cuvée Royale range includes Blanc de Blancs, Brut Nature, Brut, Rosé, Vintage and Demi-Sec; Joséphine is another cuvée of the house.
Champagne is a wine with a protected designation of origin (PDO). According to the Comité Champagne, the wine ferments a second time in the bottle and matures on the lees for at least 15 months, and for vintage cuvées at least three years. Joseph Perrier is a brand; Champagne is the name of a place. The WHO reminds that there is no safe amount of alcohol that does not affect health.
