📜 Limoux
Wines from around Limoux in the Pyrenean foothills, where still whites and reds are made.
Limoux is a wine appellation in Languedoc in southern France. It lies around the small town of Limoux, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, not far from Carcassonne. It is cooler here than on the coast, because the land is higher and closer to the mountains, and the influences of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean mix.
Under this name still wines, meaning not sparkling, are made, both white and red. The whites are most often from Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc, with some of the local Mauzac. The reds are made from Merlot and other red grapes. The whites of Limoux are especially valued, and some are aged in barrel.
The area is known for something else too: sparkling wines are made nearby, and they are called some of the oldest in the world. But the sparkling wines go under separate names, while Limoux as an appellation refers to still wines.
The name is protected as a PDO, a protected designation of origin. It lies within the Languedoc area.
