🥃 Patrón Añejo
Patrón Añejo tequila made from 100% blue Weber agave, aged from 12 months in small white oak barrels, 40% ABV.
Patrón Añejo is an aged tequila from the Patrón brand at 40% ABV. The añejo class ("old") means at least one year in oak. The colour is deep amber, and the aroma combines cooked agave, vanilla and caramel. Its ageing is of medium length among the brand's core lines.
It is the same blue Weber agave from Hacienda Patrón in Jalisco as the other lines. According to the brand's website, Añejo is aged in small white oak barrels, with each barrel selected separately. The page gives the duration in two ways, "at least 12 months" and "12–15 months", so the exact period is best checked on the label. The taste is velvety, with oak, sweet agave, chocolate and spices.
Why it matters to you. Añejo stays in contact with wood longer than Reposado, so the oak tone is more pronounced and the agave recedes. Next comes Extra Añejo, which is aged for longer still. NOM-006 requires at least one year for añejo. The WHO reminds us: there is no safe level of alcohol.
