A Ukrainian and Moldovan category of low-sugar fortified wines, such as port and sherry.
Strong wine is a category of fortified wines in Ukraine and Moldova. These are wines with little sugar, similar in idea to port and sherry. Their strength is usually 17 to 20%.
The wine gets its strength from added wine spirit. It is added to raise the alcohol level and make the wine more stable. That is why such drinks are counted as fortified wines.
The Ukrainian law On Grapes and Grape Wine and the Moldovan rules (the National Office of Vine and Wine) describe these categories separately. Nearby is Ukrainian dessert wine, which is sweeter, while strong wine is drier.
For a buyer one thing matters: the label of such a wine shows both the strength and the category. This helps not to mix it up with ordinary table wine, which has much less alcohol. In European Union countries such wines have their own names and rules, so the Ukrainian and Moldovan categories cannot always be compared directly with port or sherry.
