Ukrainian dessert wine is a category of sweet fortified wines in Ukraine and Moldova. It includes medium-sweet, sweet and liqueur wines. They are sweeter than the strong wines that are discussed next to them, and closer to desserts.
How are they described? The usual strength of such wine is from 12 to 17% alcohol. It holds from 50 to 300 grams of sugar per litre. That is a lot compared with ordinary table wine. The sweetness comes like this: fermentation is stopped by adding wine spirit, and part of the sugar stays in the wine. This is how fortified wines work.
Close to this category is Kagor, a red sweet wine known in these countries. Next to it also stands strong wine, which has less sugar but more alcohol.
The category is described by the Ukrainian law On Grapes and Grape Wine and by Moldovan rules compiled by the National Office of Vine and Wine. On a label it is worth checking both the strength and the sweetness. As with any alcohol, such wine should be drunk in moderation.
