📍 Trentino

Trentino is the southern part of the Trentino-Alto Adige region in northern Italy, in the Alps and the Dolomites. Its centre is the city of Trento. Vineyards lie in the valleys of the Adige and Sarca rivers and on the slopes by Lake Garda, in places where days are warm and nights cold. That helps the grapes keep their acidity.

The pride of the area is the sparkling wine Trento, made the same way as Champagne, with the second fermentation in the bottle, from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Another well-known wine is the red Teroldego from the Rotaliano plain. Marzemino, Lagrein and Rossara also grow there. Among whites there is Nosiola, used for the sweet Vino Santo, as well as Pinot Grigio, Müller-Thurgau and Chardonnay.

Appellations of the area include Teroldego Rotaliano, Trento, Vallagarina and Casteller. The wines are valued for freshness, lightness and an aroma of Alpine herbs.

For comparison with its neighbours: to the north Trentino borders South Tyrol, where wine is made in a German-speaking tradition, and to the east Veneto, from which Prosecco and Soave come.
