🍷 Vino novello

Type of wine ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 3 Updated:

A young Italian wine sold from late October.

Novello is a young Italian wine sold from the end of October of the same year as the harvest. The name means "new" in Italian.

Under the rules at least 40% of the wine is made by carbonic maceration. Whole berries are placed in a closed container filled with carbon dioxide, and fermentation starts inside them. The result is a light, fruity, bright wine with soft tannins and no ageing. It is made from various red grapes, most often Sangiovese and Merlot, among others.

Novello is similar to French Beaujolais Nouveau and belongs to the same "nouveau" type. It is drunk young, in the first months after release, because it is not made for keeping. It goes well with roasted chestnuts, sausages and light appetisers. The style is tied to autumn and the start of the new-vintage season. Italian novello shows that wine can be fresh and quickly ready, not only aged.
