🍇 Auxerrois Blanc
A white grape related to Chardonnay; grown in Alsace and Luxembourg.
Auxerrois Blanc is a white grape, a relative of Chardonnay. They share the same parents: Pinot and Gouais Blanc. Auxerrois comes from northeastern France. It grows in Alsace, as well as in Luxembourg and in Baden, Germany.
Wines from Auxerrois are soft and round, with aromas of apple, pear and a touch of honey or nuts. Acidity is moderate, and the taste is fuller and richer than that of many other white grapes. In Alsace it is often drunk as an everyday white. Sometimes it is blended with Pinot Blanc.
Auxerrois is also used for sparkling wines, for example Alsace Crémant. It is tied to French wine, to Alsace and to Baden. In the VIVC database it is shown as a descendant of Gouais Blanc, one of France's old varieties. A grape with a similar name is also found among reds in Cahors, but that is a different variety.
