🍇 Gouais Blanc

Grape variety ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 3

An old white grape of Central Europe; an ancestor of Chardonnay, Riesling and Gamay.

Gouais Blanc is an old white grape of Central Europe that was long seen as a "peasant" variety. The berries gave a lot of juice, but not very tasty juice. Today it has almost vanished, but in importance it holds a special place in the history of wine.

The point is that genetic research showed Gouais Blanc was a parent of many famous varieties. Crossing it with Pinot produced Chardonnay, Gamay, Aligoté and a number of others. Riesling is also related to it. Among its descendants are Dameron, Peurion, Meslier-Saint-François, Arbois and many more.

So in a glass of Chardonnay or Riesling lies a story of an old, low-value variety crossed with better ones. In the Middle Ages Gouais Blanc was grown on flat sites in France and Germany, and rulers more than once banned it so as not to lower wine quality.

Gouais Blanc is an example of how a simple variety turned out to be the ancestor of world fame. It is also called the "ancestor" of Riesling, Chardonnay and Gamay.
