🥃 Burgas Muscat Rakia (Bourgaska Muscatova rakya)
Bulgarian wine spirit with an EU GI from Burgas Province: Muscat aroma, at least 6 months in oak, 40% vol.
Burgas Muscat Rakia (Бургаска мускатова ракия) is an EU-protected geographical indication for a Bulgarian wine spirit from grapes of Burgas Province on the Black Sea coast. It is distilled from wine, aged for at least six months in oak and bottled at 40% vol.; the technical file describes a Muscat aroma and a taste of dried fruit with vanilla.
The vineyards lie around Aytos, Burgas, Kableshkovo, Nesebar, Pomorie, Sredets and Tsarevo, at altitudes of up to 350 m, with 6,598 ha of bearing vines. Eight white varieties are permitted, among them Muscat Ottonel, Misket Cherven and Dimyat, plus five red ones: Pamid, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mavrud and Syrah. Each variety is harvested separately once its sugar content reaches 16.1%.
The wine ferments in reinforced-concrete tanks with a pure yeast culture. It is distilled continuously in Bulgarian K-5, DK-2 and NM-3000 stills to 55–57% vol. The spirit matures in 350–620 l barrels of Strandzha oak, a protected species that in Europe grows only in the Strandzha massif. Selected batches are kept in old brandy casks so that the oak does not mask the Muscat.
Production began under an industry standard of 1985. The name was approved by Order No. T-RD-27-22 of the Minister of Economy dated 27 November 2013, while the EU register gives 21 June 2005 as the date of protection. Before sale, every batch needs a report from an accredited laboratory and a certificate from the regional chamber in Burgas; bottling is also allowed outside the province.
Why it matters for you. A golden colour can also come from caramel, so on its own it does not prove long ageing. Look for the full GI name and the strength on the label. WHO reminds us: there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.

Frequently asked questions
What is Burgas Muscat Rakia?
A Bulgarian wine spirit with a protected EU geographical indication. It is made from wine produced from grapes of Burgas Province, aged for at least six months in oak and bottled at 40% vol.
Is it true that it is made only from Muscat?
No. The technical file permits eight white varieties, including Muscat Ottonel, Misket Cherven and Chardonnay, and five red ones: Pamid, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mavrud and Syrah. The Muscat aroma is a characteristic of the drink, not a single-variety requirement.
What is it aged in?
In oak barrels of 350–620 l, most often made of Strandzha oak (Quercus hartwissiana), for at least six months. Selected batches mature in old brandy casks.
To what strength is the wine distilled?
To 55–57% vol. in Bulgarian continuous K-5, DK-2 and NM-3000 stills. The spirit is then diluted with demineralised water to 40% vol.
Who checks Burgas Muscat Rakia?
Every batch has a report from an accredited laboratory and a certificate of authenticity from the Regional Vine and Wine Chamber “Southern Black Sea” in Burgas, whose tasting commission assesses the drink.
