Protected spirit name ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 6 Updated:

Bulgarian wine spirit with an EU GI from Yambol Province: a blend of white and red varieties, drawn off at 62–65% vol.

Yambol Grape Rakia (Ямболска гроздова ракия) is an EU-protected geographical indication for a Bulgarian wine spirit from Yambol Province and part of Burgas. Spirit from white and red grapes is distilled in Bulgarian K5 and DK-1 column stills to 62–65% vol. and mostly kept without oak; limited series age at least six months in barrels. Strength from 40% vol.

The zone covers 31 localities in nine municipalities, from Yambol and Straldzha to Elhovo and Topolovgrad; the average altitude is 190 m. It is one of the warmest areas of Bulgaria: 180–210 frost-free days and 2,200–2,250 hours of sunshine a year. The white varieties, among them Rikat, Bolgar, Misket Cherven, Dimyat and Viognier, give a fruity aroma, while red ones such as Merlot and Pamid give a pronounced grape taste.

White grapes are picked at a sugar content of 16–19% and acidity of at least 500 g/hl, red ones at 18–20% or more and at least 600 g/hl. Picking containers hold no more than 15 l, processing takes 12–24 hours, and 100 kg of grapes yield no more than 75 l of wine. Spirits from white and red varieties are blended; the colour of unaged rakia is adjusted with caramel. The best spirits mature in barrels of up to 1,000 l made of Strandzha oak with staves 3–4 cm thick.

Rakia was distilled in the region’s small distilleries from the 1930s, and industrially from 1974 in the wine cellars of Yambol. The name was approved by Order No. T-RD-27-20 of 27 November 2013; Regulation (EU) 2019/1682 of 2 October 2019 registered the GI.

Why it matters for you. Most Yambol rakia has never seen oak, so its colour says nothing about its age. WHO reminds us: there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
