π Elbling
An old white grape of the Mosel Valley that makes light, crisp wines.
Elbling is an ancient white grape of the Moselle valley in Germany. It has been grown here for a very long time, perhaps since Roman times. Elbling grows in the Upper Moselle and in Luxembourg. The variety crops heavily and is hardy, but its wines are plain.
Elbling wine is light, low in alcohol, with bright acidity and notes of green apple and citrus. It is refreshing, so it is drunk young and chilled. Thanks to its acidity, the grape suits the base for sparkling wine, and sparkling wine is made from Elbling on the Moselle. There is also a simple local wine called Landwein der Mosel.
Elbling is one of the old varieties of Europe. DNA analysis shows it descends from Gouais Blanc, a parentage it shares with Riesling. There is also a rosΓ© form, Rosa Elbling. The grape belongs to German wine. Today less of it is planted, but it remains part of the local tradition of the Moselle.
