A narrow strip along the Moselle, home of sparkling crémant.

The Luxembourg Moselle is a narrow wine strip in south-eastern Luxembourg along the Moselle river. For 42 kilometres the river forms the border between Luxembourg and Germany, so wine is made in three countries: Luxembourg, Germany and France. The district is part of Luxembourgish wine and is protected as a PDO. It is divided into the cantons of Remich and Grevenmacher.

Winemaking here is known from Roman times. Today the vineyards cover about 1,200 to 1,300 hectares. They lie on slopes along the river. About two thirds of the grapes are delivered to cooperatives united under the common name Vinsmoselle.

Luxembourg makes mostly dry white wines and sparkling wines called Crémant. According to 2006–2007 data, the most widespread grape is Müller-Thurgau under the name Rivaner, about 29% of plantings. Next come Auxerrois Blanc (about 14%), Pinot Gris (about 14%), Riesling (about 13%), Pinot Blanc (11%) and Elbling (about 9.5%). Among reds Pinot Noir is significant.

In the past Luxembourg winemakers produced a lot of simple Elbling, which was sent to Germany for blending. Today the emphasis is on quality.
