📜 Greco di Tufo
A white wine from the Greco grape on the hills of Irpinia in Campania.
Greco di Tufo is a white wine made from the Greco grape on the hills of Irpinia, around the town of Tufo in Campania, southern Italy. The name comes from tufo, volcanic tuff, a light soft rock that makes up the local slopes.
Greco is one of the region's ancient varieties. The wine is usually dry and pale, with aromas of flowers, pear and almond, fresh acidity and clear minerality. Irpinia lies at altitude, so nights are cool and the grapes stay fresh. Sparkling versions exist too, and aged wines gain depth.
Greco di Tufo is protected as a PDO. It is one of the still white wines of Campania and is counted among the best whites of southern Italy. It goes with seafood, fish and light vegetable dishes. This example shows that southern Italy makes not only dense reds but also fine white wines.
