📜 Vermentino di Gallura
A white wine from Vermentino from the granite hills of Gallura in northern Sardinia.
Vermentino di Gallura is a white wine from Vermentino grown on the granite hills of Gallura in northern Sardinia, Italy. The name is protected as a designation of origin (PDO). It is the only wine of Sardinia with Italy's highest category, DOCG. Gallura is the hilly north-east of the island, where the soil is granite and sandy and winds blow from the sea. The climate is warm and dry. On such soil Vermentino gives a pale wine with bright freshness, notes of citrus, green apple and herbs, and a hint of saltiness. The finish is slightly bitter. The wine is made still, and also sparkling. The still wine is served young and well chilled. Some examples are aged on the lees or made from late-picked grapes, and the wine is then fuller and more complex. This wine goes well with seafood, grilled fish and pasta with vegetables, as is customary in Sardinia. Vermentino di Gallura is the island's calling card.
