🍷 Portonic
A Portuguese cocktail: white Port with tonic, ice and lemon.
Portonic is a light Portuguese cocktail. It is made from white port and tonic water, with ice and a slice of lemon, sometimes a sprig of mint. It is a summer aperitif that is especially popular in the city of Porto.
The base is white port. This is a fortified wine made from white grapes in the Douro Valley. Grape spirit is added during fermentation, so it is stronger than ordinary wine. In the cocktail it is diluted with tonic, which makes the drink softer and fresher.
Portonic belongs to the wine cocktails: wine is mixed with a fizzy drink and ice. In spirit it is close to a spritzer, but it has its own taste: slightly bitter from the tonic and a little nutty from the port. It is served in a large glass with plenty of ice.
It shows how Portuguese wine ends up not only in the bottle but also in modern drinks. Like any alcohol, it should be enjoyed in moderation.
