A popular sparkling wine from the Glera grape from north-eastern Italy.

Prosecco is a popular sparkling wine with a protected name from north-eastern Italy, from the regions of Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia. It is made mainly from the white Glera grape. The name comes from the village of Prosecco near Trieste. The area around Conegliano and Valdobbiadene has its own higher-ranking name.

Prosecco is made by the tank method: the second fermentation takes place not in the bottle, as in champagne, but in a large sealed steel tank. The wine is then bottled under pressure. The method is faster and cheaper, and the wine is fresh and fruity, without a yeasty taste. The aroma recalls apple, pear, white flowers and citrus.

There are several types. Spumante is fully sparkling, frizzante lightly sparkling, and there is still wine. Since 2020 pink Prosecco may also be made, with Pinot Noir added. Sweetness is shown with the words brut, extra dry and dry: most often the wine is off-dry or dry.

Prosecco belongs to sparkling wines and to the wines of Veneto. It is served chilled, as an aperitif or in cocktails such as Aperol Spritz or Bellini. Alcohol is for adults.
