📍 Slovácko
The eastern part, known for its folk culture.
Slovácko (Moravian Slovakia) is a subregion of Moravia in south-eastern Czechia, by the border with Slovakia. It is known for folk culture: traditional costumes, songs, dances and festivals survive here. One of them is the verbuňk dance, included by UNESCO on its list of intangible heritage. The centres are the towns of Hodonín, Uherské Hradiště and Kyjov. In autumn harvest festivals and wine festivals take place here.
Vineyards lie on hills between forests and fields. The climate is warm and dry with a long summer. Soils are clay and loess, with sandstone on some slopes. In the east the vineyards are sheltered by the White Carpathians. Among white grapes Welschriesling (Ryzlink vlašský) grows here, and among reds Blaufränkisch (Frankovka). The wines are fresh and fruity, white, red and rosé.
A special feature of the subregion is villages with rows of whitewashed wine cellars, called “plže”. One of the best known is in the village of Petrov. The cellars serve not only as storage but also as places for festivities, with tastings and dances.
For comparison with its neighbours: to the west lie the Velké Pavlovice and Mikulov subregions, and to the east across the border Slovakia.
