Granite slopes around Znojmo.
Znojmo is a wine subregion in southern Moravia, in Czechia, around the town of Znojmo near the Austrian border. It is part of Moravia. Vineyards lie on the slopes of the Dyje (Thaya) river, next to Podyjí National Park.
Soils are granite, gneiss and sand, giving light, mineral wines. The climate is warm and dry with cool nights, among the warmest in Czechia. The Šobes vineyards above the river are well known.
The main grapes are white: Grüner Veltliner, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Müller-Thurgau. Wines are fresh, aromatic, dry or off-dry. Reds and sparkling wines are made as well.
Znojmo is known not only for wine but also for pickled gherkins, of which the town is proud. A trip here is easy from Vienna. To the south lies Austria's Weinviertel with similar grapes. Znojmo wines suit fish, poultry and traditional Czech dishes, as well as the town's famous gherkins. The historic part of Znojmo stands on a rock above the river, with medieval underground passages beneath it. Wine festivals are held here, and wine can be tasted right in the old town.
