Wiener Gemischter Satz is a Viennese white wine made from several varieties that grow mixed together in one vineyard and are harvested together. The name can be translated as "Viennese mixed planting". It is a special old way of growing grapes in Vienna, Austria. The rules are these. The wine must contain at least three white varieties, planted together on one plot and picked at the same time. No variety may exceed half, and the third largest must contribute at least 10 percent. The name is protected as a designation of origin (PDO), and in the Austrian system it belongs to the DAC. Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Traminer and other varieties are usually used. In the past growers planted different varieties together in case one failed because of weather. Now it is a style category of its own. The wine is fresh and floral, with a variety of flavours, not strictly one grape. Wiener Gemischter Satz is served in Viennese taverns called Heuriger, where young wine is drunk with a light snack. It is valued as a drink inseparable from the city itself.
