🥃 Vinars Vrancea
Romanian wine spirit with an EU GI from Vrancea County: at least one year in oak, categories V, VS, VSOP, XO, from 37.5% vol.
Vinars Vrancea is an EU-protected geographical indication for a Romanian wine spirit from Vrancea County in eastern Romania. Vinars is the traditional Romanian name for a drink made from wine spirit: it is distilled to no more than 86% vol., aged for at least a year in oak barrels and sold from 37.5% vol., without sweetening or flavouring.
The zone is the whole of Vrancea County, including the delimited vineyards of Panciu, Odobești and Cotești; these names may be added on the label. The producer chooses the varieties, and the file recommends, among others, Aligoté, Galbenă de Odobești, Șarbă, Fetească Albă and Fetească Regală, and Muscat Ottonel. The spirit yield is up to 22 hl per hectare, and 20% more in high-yield years.
It is distilled twice over an open fire in copper pot stills or continuously in columns; heads and tails are discarded. Distillation and ageing must take place in the zone, and at least 75% of the spirits must come from it; blending, dilution and bottling may happen elsewhere. The barrels hold 400–650 l and are either new or ex-wine. The only permitted additions are natural extracts of raisins, figs or carob, and caramel for colour.
The categories depend on the age of the spirit: V at least one year, VS three, VSOP five, XO seven years. The legal basis is provided by Romanian Orders No. 147 of 2005 and No. 368 of 2008; the technical file was sent to the EU on 6 December 2017.
Why it matters for you. The V–XO marks on vinars carry the same minimum periods as in the file, and stars are allowed only as a count of those years. WHO reminds us: there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
