📜 Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Famous red wines of the southern Rhône from the village where the Avignon popes had their summer castle.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a famous appellation in the southern Rhône Valley of France. The name means "the pope's new castle". In the 14th century the summer residence of the popes stood here, near the city of Avignon. Around it the popes planted vineyards.
The appellation's land is covered with large rounded pebbles. By day the stones heat up and by night they give heat back to the vine, so the berries ripen well. The climate is Mediterranean, windy and dry.
The main thing here is red wine. It is blended from several grapes: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and others. Many varieties are permitted. White wines are made in smaller amounts, from Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and others. Reds are warm, full and spicy, with high alcohol.
The name on the bottle is protected. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a still wine. It keeps well, is usually opened after several years of ageing and suits meat dishes.
