📜 Crémant d'Alsace
A sparkling wine from Alsace made the same way as Champagne.
Crémant d'Alsace is a sparkling wine of Alsace, a region in eastern France on the German border. It is made the same way as Champagne: the second fermentation takes place in the bottle, where the bubbles appear. The name is protected as a PDO.
Various grapes are used for crémant: Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Rosé crémant is made from Pinot Noir. The base wine is usually light and fresh, with apple and citrus notes.
Crémant is not Champagne: that name belongs only to Champagne. But the method of making it is the same, so quality is often higher than in simple sparkling wines. The price is usually lower than Champagne, and the wine suits appetisers or serves as an aperitif.
Alsace is a region where wines are traditionally named by grape. Crémant d'Alsace continues this tradition: the label often shows which grape the wine is made from.
