🥃 Don Julio Añejo
Tequila from 100% blue agave by Don Julio, aged from 18 months to two years in American white oak that previously held bourbon.
Don Julio Añejo is the longest-aged of the three core Don Julio versions, made from 100% blue agave. The official website speaks of more than 18 months of ageing and 40% ABV, while Difford's Guide gives 18 months to two years and 38% ABV. The figures therefore depend on the market.
Production. The tequila matures in American white oak that previously held bourbon; Difford's Guide calls these barrels recharged. According to the same description, the colour is light gold and the taste smooth, with notes of lime, marzipan, tea and toffee, and a long finish with vanilla.
Why it matters to you. Añejo helps you compare the depth that barrel ageing gives: it is longer than Reposado and much longer than Blanco, which never saw a barrel. It is not a separate brand but one of Don Julio's lines, so look for the word Añejo on the label. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
