Parmareggio is an Italian Parmigiano Reggiano brand founded in 1983 near Reggio Emilia and owned since 2004 by the Granterre cooperative.
Parmareggio is an Italian brand of Parmigiano Reggiano and butter. The company was founded in 1983 in Montecavolo di Quattro Castella, in the hills near Reggio Emilia, inside the Parmigiano Reggiano area of origin.
In 2004 Parmareggio was acquired by the Granterre Consortium. Granterre was set up in 1959 by eight Parmigiano Reggiano dairies to process cream and butter; today it is a cooperative of about 1,000 farms and dairies. The brand belongs to Caseifici Granterre S.p.A., with its head office and plant in Modena and production sites in Montecavolo and Sommacampagna (Verona).
Ranges listed on the official site: Parmigiano Reggiano pieces aged over 12, 22 and 30 months; Le Eccellenze — 40 months, 24-month mountain, Vacche Rosse and Vacche Brune breed milk, and organic; I Grattugiati — grated cheese; snacks and sticks (Parmareggio Snack, Stick) and Petali di Parma shavings. There is also the L'ABC della merenda children's snack kit.
All the brand's cheese is Parmigiano Reggiano PDO, a hard cheese made from raw cow's milk under the consortium specification. Parmareggio notes that it contains no preservatives or additives, is gluten-free and naturally lactose-free as a result of long ageing.
How to choose: the pack shows the age in months and the PDO mark; the longer the ageing, the drier and more savoury the cheese.
