📜 Pic Saint-Loup
A Languedoc appellation by the mountain of the same name north of Montpellier, with Syrah-based red wines.
Pic Saint-Loup is a wine appellation of Languedoc in southern France. It is named after the mountain of the same name north of the city of Montpellier. It is a well-known limestone peak, visible from afar, and has become a symbol of the district.
The vineyards lie on slopes at the foot of the mountain. Summers are hot, but nights are cooler than on the plain, which helps the grapes keep freshness. The soils are limestone and stony.
Red and rosé wines are made, and the base of the reds is Syrah. Grenache and Mourvèdre are added to it. These three grapes form the backbone of the blend. The wines are rich, with notes of dark berries, herbs and pepper. All the wine is still, meaning not sparkling.
The name is protected as a PDO, a protected designation of origin. It lies within the Languedoc area and is regarded as one of its most expressive districts. The wines go well with meat and Mediterranean food.
