🍷 Moscatel Sherry

Type of wine ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 2

A sweet fortified wine made from Muscat in the Jerez area.

Moscatel Sherry is a sweet fortified wine from Muscat, made in the Jerez area of Andalusia in southern Spain. The base is the Muscat of Alexandria grape, called moscatel in Spain. Jerez is also known for other wines, such as the dry fino and the sweet Pedro Ximénez.

The grapes are usually dried in the sun before pressing, so that the berries hold more sugar. The juice from such grapes is thick and sweet. Grape spirit is added to the fermenting must, fermentation stops, and a lot of sugar stays in the wine. The wine is then aged in casks and darkens.

Moscatel Sherry tastes soft and sweet, with aromas of orange, honey, raisins and flowers. It is served in small glasses, chilled, with desserts, cheese or ice cream.

It is similar to Pedro Ximénez but more aromatic and lighter. Muscat of Alexandria is also used in other parts of Spain, such as Málaga and Valencia, and in Portugal. Moscatel Sherry is one of Spain’s fortified wines. Alcohol is for adults.
